TThe GREEKOREA project captures an ongoing story of relationships among the members of the Gugak Jazz Society from Korea, Greece and the United States. Relationships that began with friendship; developed musical curiosity out of cultural differences and similarities; and encouraged us to find creative solutions to play and exist together in a meaningful way.
In the GREEKOREA repertoire, there are two songs from Asia Minor and two songs based on Korean traditional music as well as original compositions based on Korean concepts.

In response to the COVID-19 situation, the recording sessions were conducted in three different countries:
Boston, USA – piano, drums and Middle Eastern percussion (bendir, riq, darbuka), bass, gayageum (Korean zither)
Seoul, Korea – Korean percussion (janggu, kkwaenggwari, jing, sori-buk), Korean wind instruments (piri, saengwahng, taepyungso), vocals in the style of Pansori (Korean musical storytelling)
Athens, Greece – laouto (Greek lute)

The overarching theme of the repertoire is one’s psychological or emotional transition from darkness to light, which resonates with many of us who are living ordinary lives––especially artists who are conducting a project under the COVID-19 pandemic.
The two traditional songs from Greece and Korea ("The Greeting of Violets" and "Milyang Arirang") express loss and yearning for past loves, which transform into a new hope for the future in the song “Dalmaji” ("Night of the Full Moon”), resulting in re-understanding the past in “Funeral Song.”

Everyone’s story resembles another’s, and it is our hope that this music can inspire you to think about how to live together even when we face conflicts and differences.
Life is improvisational, replete with unanticipated and astonishing events. We improvise to find creative solutions in the moment. We keep trying.

Director of the Gugak Jazz Society
